Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Live Updates Today 18 June: Tamil Nadu recorded 596 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday with active cases touching 3,073. 217 patients were discharged after treatment today in the state.

In other news, AIADMK Joint Coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday held a massive show of strength in northern Tamil Nadu, a day after party colleague and Coordinator O Panneerselvam sought to veto his camp’s single leadership proposal. While followers of both Palaniswami (EPS) and Panneerselvam (OPS) were engaged in backroom negotiations to mobilise the support of party functionaries for their respective leaders, parleys continued as well to resolve the bickering well ahead of the June 23 General Council meeting.

Foreign currencies amounting to Rs 34.76 lakh were seized from three women passengers ahead of their departure to Colombo, the Customs Department said on Saturday.

Acting on specific inputs, the department sleuths intercepted the passengers, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, and detected US dollars in the denomination of 100 totalling Rs 34.76 lakh that was concealed in their baggage, a press release said. (PTI)

Sex workers should not be arrested or penalised whenever a brothel house is raided by police, the Madras High Court has ruled.

Tamil Nadu government has a set a target of providing educational loans to the tune of Rs 350 crore this year, said State Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji on Saturday. After distributing a loan of Rs 44 crore to 293 students at a function here, he told reporters that Rs 100 crore as loan would be provided to the students in another 30 days. The students can approach their educational institutions or contact the district administration if they found it difficult to get the loan directly from banks, he said. (PTI)

Wondering if the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is empowered to discuss Karnataka's Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river at its meeting, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday contended that the decision to discuss the subject is "arbitrary and illegal." Expressing shock over CWMA chairman S K Haldar's remarks in Thanjavur that the matter would be discussed at the meeting on June 23, Stalin sought to know if Haldar has "powers to make arbitrary decisions."

The CWMA does not have powers to discuss a subject that has already been taken to the Supreme Court, the Chief Minister said in a statement here. "Knowing about this and announcing to discuss the issue are illegal," Stalin claimed.

Hence, it has been decided to send a legislature party delegation under State Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan to New Delhi to convey people's anguish to the Centre. "We have sought appointment from the Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The panel will very soon visit Delhi and convey the people's anguish caused by Haldar's announcement in Thanjavur," he said. Tamil Nadu would not allow the construction of the dam and would fight against it in the Supreme Court, Stalin said. Two-time Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have handed defender Mohammad Sajid Dhot a new two-year contract that keeps him at the club until 2024.

The 24-year-old was impressive in the six matches that he had played for the club in the second half of the ISL last season.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has announced that power will be suspended in parts of Chennai today in Mylapore, Tambaram, Egmore, Avadi/Pattabiram, Ambattur, Porur, Thiruvanmayur, Puzhal, KK Nagar, Madhavaram, Ponneri for carrying out maintenance work in the city. Parts of Chennai will face a power shutdown from 9 am to 2 pm, with supply expected to resume before 2 pm if the work is completed.

In the wake of a mild surge in Covid-19 cases in Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) in association with the state health department planned to depute mobile RT-PCR teams in zones with a high number of cases. According to a release from the civic body on Thursday, a total of 797 RT-PCR tests were conducted on Wednesday.

In Chennai, as many as 140 primary health centres and 16 urban community centres were carrying out the RT-PCR tests at free of cost. Due to the increase in cases — especially in four zones — Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam, Teynampet and Adyar, eight mobile RT-PCR teams with two for each zone will be on duty starting Friday (June 17). Residents can dial 1913 to get their RT-PCR tests done at the doorstep. Read more

A disability rights activist’s public-interest petition seeking a direction to make the Chennai Metro disabled-friendly has thrown light on the state of affairs in the rapid transit system. In reply to Vaishnavi Jayakumar’s petition, the metro told the Madras High Court on Wednesday that it would retrofit all the 32 stations to make them disabled-friendly in six weeks.

Vaishnavi tweeted a video on Wednesday showing a disabled woman struggling to navigate an inclined ramp. “The heart in mouth video shows a very strong disabled woman laboriously try to navigate a smooth, slippery surfaced, impossibly inclined ‘ramp’ (1:5?). Self propelling on a wheelchair, despite sliding often, from 0:20 near the top, front caster wheels keep lifting off surface,” she wrote on Twitter.  Read more

Accordingly, the Thiruvananthapuram-Secunderabad Sabari Express is fully cancelled, while Mysuru-Dharbhanga Bagmati Express, Ernakulam-Barauni Raptisagar Express and Bengaluru Danapur Sanghamitra Express were partially cancelled, the Southern Railway said in a press release. Read more

As per the audio clip leaked ahead of the parent-teachers association (PTA) election at a government higher secondary school near Vilathikulam, where close to 700 students are enrolled, a computer teacher – identified only as Meena – first speaks to a male student and later hands over the phone allegedly to maths teacher Kalaiselvi. The latter is heard telling the boy that the elections are going to take place and that some teachers are insisting that the administration must not enrol students from his village. Read more

Businesses in the United States should invest in Tamil Nadu as it is strategically placed for industrial growth with the presence of sea ports and airports, State Minister Thangam Thennarasu said on Friday. The Minister for Industries said the State is a preferred destination for investment because of a progressive and pro-active government.

Thennarasu, along with his Cabinet colleague Minister for Finance and Human Resources Palanivel Thiagarajan took part in an event held to mark the 246th anniversary of United States independence and 75 years of US-India partnership organised by the U S Consulate here on Thursday, a press release said.

Thiagarajan, in his speech, said the people-to-people connect between the two countries runs a lot deeper and the ties would grow and strengthen the relationship. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu, witnessing a surge in new coronavirus cases, added 589 infections on Friday, which include four returnees from domestic and overseas, pushing the caseload to 34,59,586, the health department said. The death toll remained unchanged at 38,026 with zero fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, a medical bulletin said.
